Medium of your choice & paper to suit the medium. (If painting, oil paints lend themselves to painting clouds or soft pastels or if drawing, willow charcoal (not compressed charcoal) or pencil works well.
Brushes & palette if painting. - If working with oil paint, please make sure you are using no odour solvent such as Zest It.
- Subject matter to bring:
- Please bring a photo/s to work from.
- June 4th: Oil Painting (week 1) (Demo available, working from a photo of a Still Life, supplied by Sarah)
- Materials to bring:
-
Stiff bristle brushes suitable for oil/acrylic. I will have some spare that can be used, but not enough for everyone, so if you have your own that will be great.
Palette (A cheap option is to use just greaseproof paper or an ordinary palette). If using greaseproof paper, you will need parcel tape to hold it down to the table, as masking tape won't stick.
Rag/s to wipe brushes
Low odour white spirit if using oils or low odour solvent such as Sansador or Zest it. Some will be available at the venue if you don't have any & a small contribution can be paid to cover the cost of what you use.
Surface suitable for oil painting. Options would be canvas paper, canvas, canvas board, wood panel or plywood (primed with either gesso or PVA/water mix & then household emulsion). -
Oil paints. If you would like to just try out oil paints without having to go out & buy them, there will be oil paints at the venue. (A small contribution towards what you use would be great).
Colours if bringing your own (as close to the following as you can):
Oils:
Quinacridone Rose
Ultramarine blue
Burnt Umber
Cerulean blue
Lemon yellow
Titanium white - Subject matter to bring:
- Photos of the same image used for the demo will be availble to work from, however if you prefer to bring your own, that is absolutely fine.

- Same as last week
- Subject matter to bring:
- Same as last week
BLOCK 3:
- June 18th: Abstract (week 1)
- There are many ways to go about creating an abstract, such as deconstructing an image, zooming in, flipping the canvas, layering componant shapes by possibly using tracing paper or layout paper One or two options can be expolored with tips & guidance in this session. To prepare for this session, you may want to look at some abstract artists such as Ben Nicholson, Mark Rothko, Pablo Picasso, Robert Delaunay, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Kline, Piet Mondrian & William Scott for example. You may wish to bring in some images of abstract artwork also, to enrich the session.
- Materials to bring:
-
Drawing/painting medium of your choice, however acrylic or oil paint would be ideal as you can make changes easily & allow your artwork to evolve.
Paper or surface to work on appropriate for the medium that you are using.
2B pencil for tracing
Tracing paper (or greaseproof paper...not the brown one, the clearish one, works quite well)
Optional: You might like to add in a little collage into your work, so if you would like you could bring in some collage bits & bobs (including glue). - Subject matter to bring:
- Your own choice of subject matter. Please bring reference photos/objects etc. to work from.
- June 25th: Abstract (week 2)
- Materials to bring:
- Same as last week
- Subject matter to bring:

- July 2nd: Collage (week 1)
- Collage can have many approaches. You might find it useful to look at collages created by other artists for inspiration & to choose your approach. An interesting idea that you might want to look at is using collage materials that have relavance to your subject matter or the idea for subject matter might come from sources that are meaningful to you. Just one example of this approach is by Nancy Standlee. She has found old recipe books & music that links into meaningful memories for her around apple recipes. She uses these to create an apple image. Please see image below.
- Nancy Standlee (more info. about the image & the artist here)
-
Another option (cup of coffee example below), is to use found text of differing tonal values. On the example below, pieces of text have been used to create light, medium & dark tones, as well using text that has references to the subject.
To save time in class, you can sort your cut/torn pieces into tones & colours if you wish.
IAnother option might be to follow on from the abstract weeks & create an abstract collage. This could even be a collage of an abstract painting/drawing that you have already created!
Alternatively, you could use a painting that you have already created & cut/tear it up & re-arrange to create an abstract (you could take a photo of it & do a printout if you don't wish to cut up the original). - Materials to bring:
-
Glue or glue stick
Materials to collage with. For example, newspaper/magazines/coloured paper, cardboard packaging -
Sharp scissors &/or craft knife.
A spatula or similar to apply glue - Subject matter to bring:
- Please bring a photo/s to work from (your own choice of subject matter) or you can work from your imagination & let your image evolve if you prefer.
