Weekly Art Classes
RYE VENUE
SCHEDULE (Wednesdays)
AUTUMN TERM:
BLOCK 1:
- Sept. 24th: Still Life in Charcoal
- (Demo available for charcoal, but any medium you would like to work in is fine)
- Materials to bring:
-
If working in charcoal, Willow Charcoal is recommended & a good quality cartridge paper (A3 minimum would be best in order to work more freely) & a plastic eraser would be good.
Alternatively, you could add water to your charcoal to move it around on the paper. You can use compressed charcoal for this if you like or willow charcoal or even a combination of both. If you are planning to use water, please make sure that you use a heavy weight cartridge paper that can take water or even a smooth watercolour paper. If using water, you might like to bring some brushes or something such as a sponge or cloth to move the charcoal around on the surface. - Subject matter to bring:
- If you are able to bring any object/s for a Still Life setup if possible, that you would find interesting to draw, would be great.
- Oct. 1st: Interior Space (You might like to look at Alberto Giacometti's drawings of interior spaces).
- Demo available for loose sketching & guidance for persective etc. available if necessary.
- For example, you could draw the corner of a room, or inside a cupboard space, inside a shed or inside a bag with it's contents. You might even like to work in the style of Giacometti?...
- Materials to bring:
- Medium of your choice, although pencil sketching would be good for this or even a cheap biro
- Paper suitable for your chosen medium
- Subject matter to bring:
- This would depend on what you are planning to draw. If it is something portable that you could bring into the class, that would be great. However, if it is inside a shed for example, please bring a photo to work from. Alternatively it could possibly be an interior space within the venue.
- Oct. 8th: Garden theme (Week 1)
- Any interpretation of the theme is great. For example you might like to focus on something other than plants (although it is of course absolutely fine if you would like to focus on plants). Possibilities could be garden tools or a garden shed, workspace or sculptures in a garden, an aerial view plan for a garden or water features or garden gates, or a wheelbarrow for example or it could even be a gardener or someone or an animal in a garden. I hope this gives you plenty of ideas to start you thinking. You might like to do some sketches in preparation for this session & then develop your ideas into a piece of artwork during the session. You might find your ideas change as you go along & might be inspired by others in the group. Alternatively you may have a clear idea & go for the main artwork/s straight away).

BLOCK 2:
- Oct. 22nd: Music theme (Week 1)
-
Any interpretation of the theme is great. For example you might like to focus on a specific piece of music & interpret in an expressive or symbolic manner (you might like to look at the work of Wassily Kandinsky & Paul Klee) & or you might prefer to to draw studies of musical instruments or people playing music or a conductor or maybe expressing dance.
You might like to think about some ideas & do some sketches in preparation for this session & then develop your ideas into a piece of artwork during the session. You might find your ideas change as you go along & might be inspired by others in the group. Alternatively you may have a clear idea & go for the main artwork/s straight away) - It might be nice to do a warm up for this session by listening to some music as a group & working expressively. - Nov. 12th: Tetra Pak printmaking
- This is a method of printing that is a little bit like etching, as in making marks into the surface of the plate (this would be the tetra pak in this case), & then you ink up the indentations in a similar way to an etching plate. An example is pasted below, from a blog by Holly Newnham .
- Materials to bring:
-
Tetra Pak packaging (packaging from long life products). Products that have the foil lining include Tesco long life fruit juice, Tesco Soya Drink 1 litre, Tesco Almond Drink 1 litre, Vita Coco coconut water). This will need to be flattened out. Any folds will print, but this can just add character or if your packaging has a larger flat area without folds, this could be used.
A flat surface to ink up on (eg. a sheet of plastic or a plastic icecream lid or something of the sort) - Craft knife for cutting out sections of the surface
- Heavy weight cartridge paper
- An old teatowel or equivalent to help stop things slipping. It will get ink on it though!
- A biro & pencil
- Cotton buds can be useful
- A polypocket or a couple of pieces of plastic film to put wet paper within to keep it damp
- Greaseproof paper
- You might like to use disposable gloves
- Mountboard or an old credit card or similar to spread the ink around
- Scissors could be useful for cutting out the tetra pak, although you could probably manage with a craft knife
- You may find tweezers useful for peeling back cut out sections
- You can use an etching needle or anything with a sharp end to make marks into the surface, such as a nail or a pair of compass point or a craft knife also seems to work well for example
- Scrim or something similar, such as netting that you can get oranges packed in
- Intaglio etching ink (such as Akua Intaglio ink), although there will be some at the venue if you prefer to use that & make a small contribution
- Subject matter to bring:
- Please bring any photo/s, or drawing/s or still life objects if appropriate that you think might be helpful for your chosen subject matter. Alternatively you could work from your imagination if you prefer.
- Nov. 19th: Monoprinting
- A monoprint is a unique piece of artwork created by a printing method (of which there are many). Examples below of student's monoprints. As there are so many methods & only limited time, on this session we will be focusing on a three colour print such as the examples on the bottom row & third in from the left on the top row.
- For some monoprinting methods, you can use a pasta machine. There will be one at the venue to use in this session.
- Materials to bring:
-
Black marker pen or similar (needs to be black to see through the ink)
Pen
Pencil
Mark making & impression making objects (to make marks into the ink)
Cotton buds
Masking tape
Rags
Ruler
Images &/or objects to use to draw (if wanting to create your own images). Alternatively, there will be a couple of simple template drawings to use if you prefer.
Paper (nothing special needed, just some cartridge would be fine. 1 piece of A4 sufficient to create an underlying drawing as a guide for your print)
Inks (oil based), paper for printing onto, & printing plates will all be supplied & just a small contribution (such as £2 for materials would be fine). - Optional:
-
Tracing paper
Rubber Rollers (if you already have any, please bring along as the more the merrier). Palette knives
Brushes (stiff bristle)
Notebook
Gloves
Newspaper to cover the table - Subject matter to bring:
- Please bring a photo/s & or a still life object if appropriate that you think might be helpful, but you might like to work from your imagination & do something more abstract.
