SCHEDULE (Mondays)
2024
WINTER TERM/SPRING:
BLOCK 1:
- Jan. 8th: Plants
- (Demo available for drawing plants, but if you prefer to paint, any medium you would like to use is fine)
- Materials to bring:
- Drawing or painting materials of your choice & paper to suit the medium.
- If working with oil, please make sure you are using no odour solvent such as Zest It.
- Subject matter to bring:
- A plant or photo of plant/s to work from.
- Jan. 15th: Birds (This could be any bird/s in flight or on the ground)
- Materials to bring:
- Drawing or painting materials of your choice & paper to suit the medium.
- If working with oil, please make sure you are using no odour solvent such as Zest It.
- Subject matter to bring:
- A photo of bird/s to work from.
- Jan. 22nd: Boats
- (Demo available for drawing boats, but if you prefer to paint, any medium you would like to use is fine)
- Materials to bring:

Drawing or painting materials of your choice & paper to suit the medium.

- Subject matter to bring:

Photo of boat/s to work from.
- Jan. 29th: Buildings (This could be of a famous place & you could even include a statue if you like, but the choice is yours!)

- Drawing or painting materials of your choice & paper to suit the medium.
- If working with oil, please make sure you are using no odour solvent such as Zest It.
- Subject matter to bring:
- A photo of building/s to work from.
BLOCK 2:
- Feb. 5th: Flowers in Soft Pastels (However if you prefer to work in another medium that is absolutely fine)
- Materials to bring:

Soft pastels
Pastel paper or sugar paper (pastel paper works best though). A dark or mid-tone paper would work really well. - Subject matter to bring:
- Flower/s or photo of flower/s. If bringing flowers, you might like to bring a vase possibly?
- Feb. 12th: Landscape/Seascape in Oils or Acrylic
- Materials to bring:

Stiff bristle brushes suitable for oil/acrylic
Palette (A stay wet palette is good for acrylics & just greaseproof paper can be used for oils or an ordinary palette). If using greaseproof paper, you will need parcel tape to hold it down to the table, as masking tape won't stick.
Rag/s to wipe brushes
Low odour white spirit if using oils or low odour solvent such as Sansador or Zest it. Some will be available however at the venue if you don't have any & a small contribution can be paid to cover cost of what you use.
Surface suitable for acrylic/oil. Options for both oil or acrylic would be canvas paper,canvas, alternatively, a wooden panel such as plywood. You can buy ready made wooden panels or buy some plywood from a timber merchant. It would need to be primed first before painting on though with either gesso or PVA/water mix & then household emulsion). Alternatively A heavy weight cartridge paper can be used for acrylic, but not oils -
Either oil paints or acrylics. If you would like to just try out oil paints without having to go out & buy them, there will be oil paints at the venue. (A small contribution towards what you use would be great). Colours if bringing your own (as close to the following as you can):
Acrylic:
Process Cyan (blue)
Process Magenta
Process Yellow
Titatanium white
Oils:
Quinacridone Rose
Ultramarine
Lemon yellow
Titanium white
- Subject matter to bring:
- A photo of a landscape or seascape
- Feb. 19th: Figure Drawing (from photo) or if enough people to cover model costs, Life Drawing (working from a nude model)

(A model will be booked for this session if there are enough people & if working from the model it will be an extra £3.50 for the session). Anyone who would like to work from a model would need to confirm & pay in advance to ensure of covering costs. Please confirm when booking your course.
It is absolutely fine to do your own thing if you prefer to work on something else in this session though! - Materials to bring:

- Feb. 26th: Figure Drawing (from photo) or if enough people to cover model costs, Life Drawing (working from a nude model)

BLOCK 3:
- Mar. 4th: Portrait (from photo)
- If you prefer, you could draw other class members or you could use a mirror to do a self-portrait
- Materials to bring:

Drawing or painting materials of your choice, although if you are a beginner, drawing would be the easiest option.
Paper/surface to suit the medium - If working with oil, please make sure you are using no odour solvent such as Zest It
- Subject matter to bring:
- Image to work from of head & shoulders either profile or front view if you are a beginner. Please make sure that it is a clear photo & of a reasonable size to identify features well
- Mar. 11th: Abstract
- There are many ways to go about creating an abstract, such as deconstructing an image, zooming in, flipping the canvas, layering componant shapes by possibly using tracing paper or layout paper One or two options can be expolored with tips & guidance in this session. You may want to look at some abstract artists such as Ben Nicholson, Mark Rothko, Pablo Picasso, Robert Delaunay, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Kline, Piet Mondrian & William Scott for example.
- Materials to bring:

Drawing/painting medium of your choice, however acrylic or oil paint would be ideal as you can make changes easily & allow your artwork to evolve.
Paper or surface to work on appropriate for the medium that you are using.
2B pencil for tracing
Tracing paper (or greaseproof paper...not the brown one, the clearish one, works quite well)
Optional: You might like to add in a little collage into your work, so if you would like you could bring in some collage bits & bobs. - Subject matter to bring:
- Your own choice of subject matter. Please bring reference photos/objects etc. to work from.
- Mar. 18th: Impasto
- This is when the paint is applied thickly so that brush marks other marks can be made into the paint. The word Impasto is derived from the Italian word "pasta" which means paste. It is traditionally oil paint that is used, however you can use acrylic paint & a heavy body acrylic gel can be added to help make the acrylic paint thicker if you like.
- You might like to look at artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Vincent Van Gogh & Frank Auerbach, Claude Monet, Philip Guston, Lucian Freud & Jackson Pollock who used impasto techniques in their artwork.
- Materials to bring:

Oil or acrylic paint
If using acrylic paint, Impasto Gel for acrylic paint can be used. (As this is quite expensive, there will be some at the class to use with a contribution towards cost).
Palette knives & any mark making tools or implements that you might have
Stiff bristle brushes - Linen canvases, such as Belgian linen, are preferable if choosing a canvas because they don't sag when they have heavy paint on them. Alternatively, a wooden panel such as plywood. You can buy ready made wooden panels or buy some plywood from a timber merchant. It would need to be primed first before painting on though.

- Photo or still life objects of your choice or you may have a painting that you might like to turn into an Impasto painting. Alternatively, you can work from your imagination & let your image evolve if you prefer.
- Mar. 25th: Mixed Media (Using a variety of mediums)
- Some artists that you might like to look at that have used mixed media in their artwork are Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Pablo Picasso, George Braque & Robert Rauchenberg.
- Materials to bring:

A range of different mediums of your choice to try out together. This will be an experimantal session that you will get ideas as you go along & be inspired by other in the class too.
Just as a few starter ideas, you could try out acrylic with gel pens, acrylic markers, Posca markers, acrylic & pastel, you could add in glitter if you like or use watercolour, pens & pastels or combinations from this list. The possibilities are vast though, so feel free to bring in anything you have to give it a go. You could include some collage too if you like & if so, if you could bring in some collage bits & bobs & a glue stick or PVA glue. - Subject matter to bring:
- Photo/s or you may have drawings a sketchbook or you might prefer to do a still life. If you decide to do a still life, you could bring in some still life objects to work from. Alternatively, you can work from your imagination & let your image evolve if you prefer.
