About me
My artistic experience spans a wide range of disciplines and mediums, including fine art, mechanical drawing, and fashion design. This diverse background has developed my versatility as an artist.
Artistic Education and Professional Development
I completed an HND in Fine Art at Hastings College, before progressing directly to gain an MA in Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. This was an achievement my HND tutor noted as exceptional, as I was one of only three students in eight years to make this “leapfrog” transition. Whilst undertaking my MA, I also held an Artist in Residence position at Intaglio Printmaker in London. I later completed my studies with a PGCE teaching qualification.
Exhibitions
I have exhibited my work in London and the South East including:
- RK Burt, Southwark
- St Martin in the Fields
- Bodiam Castle
- Greenstede Gallery, East Grinstead
- Nevill Gallery, Canterbury
- Fairfax Gallery and Blue Moon in Tunbridge Wells
- The Studio, Otford,
- The Stables Theatre, Hastings
- The Arts Forum, Hastings
- Hastings Pier
Experience
My artwork is held in corporate settings and private collections across the UK and internationally. Over the years, I have undertaken a range of commissions, including portraits, illustrations, and graphic work. I am passionate about my craft and committed to maintaining the highest standards in both commissioned projects and my personal artistic practice.
Artistic Journey
I enjoy working instinctively and exploring a wide range of technical challenges. Through diverse subject matter and an innovative approach, I strive to push creative boundaries to keep my work fresh.
Whilst sudying at Hastings College of Art, I discovered monoprinting. This medium enabled me to explore imagery in which I could combine story telling with my fascination for the spiritual realm. This discovery has also enriched my practice in other mediums, such as oil painting.
What is Monoprinting?
The term monoprint includes “mono” because each print is a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork. Whilst there are many ways to create monoprints, my technique involves applying coloured oil-based etching inks onto three separate plastic sheets. On each sheet I apply one of the primary colours (red, yellow and blue). I work directly into the ink rather than the plastic, using wiping and dabbing to shape the image. Each colour layer is then overprinted onto paper using a press similar to a mangle, resulting in a singular, original artwork. The process is lengthy and meticulous, and at its final stage, I take creative risks to push the print to its fullest potential
"Sarah is the most patient, gentle and positive person. She encourages people to explore what they can each achieve to help build their artistic confidence and ability in a very relaxed creative setting. Simply 'quietly fabulous' in breaking down the fear of painting and drawing using various techniques for beginners to the more experienced. I really enjoy the relaxed creative atmosphere."
